Oktoberdress

Yes it’s November.  But this was an “October project,” so I’ve kept the name.

This dress has always been a little too tight and a little too low cut for me to actually wear out of the house.IMG_4731w

Even in the month of Oktoberfest.

But I love the style and lines of the dress.  So after letting it hang in my closet for the last two years, not getting worn, I decided the only solution is to get out the scissors and fabric and start experimenting.

IMG_4733w

I want to wear it with these boots.   Not so “Octoberfest,” but very “home.”  Boots

I had decided a calico with red and tan colors in it might be best.  I found this fabric in another fave fabric shop yesterday.  The fabric is from the “Kashmir” line by Sentimental Studios for Moda.

IMG_4736w

When I saw this Kashmir border print and color pallet, I thought it presented a seemingly endless number of possibilities.
And of course, it is the name of a great song.

I bought 2 yards of the Kashmir, to give myself plenty for experimenting and mistakes.  But still, I was nervous when I started cutting strips.

IMG_4738w

First, to add some fabric up top.   This piece is basted in place here, until I decide its final placement.IMG_4741w

Then I worked in a strip on each side, for a little more breathing room.

IMG_4744w

The strip ran the entire length of the side seam and sleeve.

IMG_4746w

I’ve always wondered how a side insert like this would work.  I was worried it would scream out, “She was too large for the dress,” which is true, of course; I am.  In this case, I think the strip concept worked out okay.

IMG_4748w

I don’t think I chose the right colors for the side strips.  I chose those colors because they went well with the boots, but I don’t think they tie in well enough with the rest of the dress.  I am considering replacing the strips with one that has the red and/or blue color in it.  But this version will do for a test wearing.

I love the bell sleeves, but they are not practical.  They are long and can drag through food and other stuff.

So, I added a border strip that can function as a sleeve cuff when needed.SAM_5798w

For now, instead of a buttoned cuff, I tried a piece of leather string tied around the wrist and knotted.

One last change was to use more of the leather string to lace up the bodice.  The blue velvet string looked limp and wrinkled.  The leather goes with the Kasmir print and the boots.

The final look.SAM_5801w

The test wearing was to a concert.  I received quite a few compliments on the dress and boots, so I’m pronouncing this project a success.  Should have done it two years ago.

The string tied around the sleeve cuff works, but needs more ‘give’ for when I stretch my arm out.  So back to the drawing board to tweak that design.

5k’s and Fall Colors

Gosh, that was a long time between posts.  I got busy with various bits of life, and collected plenty of R-S-R ‘material’ along the way, but couldn’t get anything packaged up for a complete post.  But hey, since my last post, I’ve tried out (and liked) blacklight Zumba, the Jayhawks have had a conference win, and the Wildcats are bowl-eligible.  Yay!

And, I’ve run in a couple of 5k’s, one of which was with Girls On The Run–a cool organization that indoctrinates young girls into the running culture, and gives them all sorts of other reasons to feel good about themselves.

We’ve also had an awesome colorful Fall, that has generally made it a joy to get out and run.Lake Autumn reflection--marked  Lake Autumn bench--marked

And I’m thrilled to now say I’ve sung this song with the band, and an arena full of people also singing along; to every word and every note.

Not the Weekend I Was Looking Forward To

I’m working on a sewing post that I thought I’d have done today, but the project is still a work in progress.  So in the meantime, here’s what else happened this weekend:

I didn’t get a 2014 Glastonbury ticket.

And my teams lost.  Both of them.

IMG_4694w--marked

So much for driving 160 miles each way to see one of the games, and so much for then getting up at 2:30am to be at the computer when the Glasto tickets went on sale.  They sold out while I was still in the queue.  I wonder how many thousand times I hit the refresh button.

But today was a gorgeous day to work inside and out.  Sewing project is nearly done.

State Fair, part 2

So, it was a gorgeous sunny day at the fair, when clouds suddenly moved in, the skies broke, and rain started coming down in sheets and buckets.  We headed for the indoor birthing center.  SAM_3122w

We missed the newborn calves; it was the last day of the fair, and those little ones had just been removed for the trip home.

But we saw newborn lambs and piglets.

One little piglet was really getting around.  And he moved fast.  He’s a little blur in most of my pictures.

And the rain continued to fall, so we moved on to the rabbits.

And goats.SAM_3068w SAM_3069w SAM_3070w

Then we got some hail.  So we sat down in a food tent for an early dinner.  Ever had a pulled pork parfait?  It is an entire dinner in a solo cup, complete with layers of meat, barbeque sauce, beans, and a round scoop of creamy mashed potatoes on top.  Tasty.

SAM_3129w

Then the rain finally let up, so we walked over to the Midway to see if the rides would be starting back up.

Er, looks like not. For obvious reasons, they closed the rides down for the day.  *sob*

But they gave us a ride voucher good for next year.  *cheer*

That night, from the Grandstand, we watched this guy give a fine concert.

Lots of walking, sightseeing, people watching, and running for shelter.  And then suddenly, it’s all over and I’m waiting for next year again.

Stopover

Another music fix this past weekend.  The whole weekend.

Another concert this weekend, and one next.  Then I endure a long dry spell until mid-October.

Bristol

Reminiscing on my (almost) 24 hours in Bristol at the end of June.

It started with a hike with two good friends from our hotel in the centre to the awesome Clifton bridge.IMG_2112a

Yes, I did the slide.  I recommend seat padding for the trip down.  The rock is highly polished, but it is still rock hard.IMG_2092w

It was a “green day” in Bristol.  The centre was blocked off from car traffic.  This was an uphill bicycle race.  Naturally, when I wanted to catch a photo, no one was racing.IMG_2078w IMG_2080w

After spending two hours trying to find a store that sells international plug adapters and sim cards (did find a sim card), it was on to the evening entertainment.IMG_2141w

Where in the world to start

Home from my trip.  I had hoped to make a few posts while traveling, but it wasn’t to be.  I was always on the move, or without a good internet connection, or a workspace from which to compose something.  So here I sit with 12 days worth of experiences, thoughts and photos, wondering where to start.  How about at the end?  My banner picture gives a clue–I went to Glastonbury!  I took so many photos, but it won’t do to post 300 or so…  The Rolling Stones and Mumford and Sons were highlights of the festival for me (although just being there was the main highlight).  I also loved PIL, Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, and The Proclaimers.  I’m also thrilled that I now know about The Staves.  I saw so many excellent performances.

Early both Saturday and Sunday mornings, I managed to get in run/walks, pausing to take a picture whenever I saw something interesting.  It was great getting out and seeing things while the rest of the crowd was mostly asleep.

I got to Glastonbury by coach, a really great way to go, in spite of certain factors that intervened to make it a longer trip.  Traffic congestion at Stonehenge delayed our arrival, and caused me to miss a couple of Friday concerts I’d hoped to see.  As cool as Stonehenge is, I was on a mission to see the other “Stones.”

Stonehenge traffic

But eventually, the coach crested a high ridge, and we could look down and see a panoramic view of the massive festival already underway.  There was a collective gasp from the coach passengers, followed by a sort of squeal, and then applause.

The next night I did see The Rolling Stones.  Me and 100,000 other fans.
